第11章
1. Now the whole earth had one language and the same words.
全地は同じ発音、同じ言葉であった。
- 新共同訳では「世界中は同じ言葉を使って同じように話していた」。
- 和訳の「発音」にあたる言葉はこの英訳ではlanguageにあたる？ language が使われているのはラテン語で「舌」を意味する lingua に由来することからか。
フランス語だと paroles、ヘブライ語だと דְבָרִ֖ים（ダーバーリム）で、「話し言葉」くらいの意味。
2. And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
時に人々は東に移り、シナルの地に平野を得て、そこに住んだ。
3. And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar.
彼らは互に言った、「さあ、れんがを造って、よく焼こう」。こうして彼らは石の代りに、れんがを得、しっくいの代りに、アスファルトを得た。
- bitumen：瀝青
- mortar：漆喰
- 石の代わりに煉瓦を、漆喰の代わりに瀝青を使う。技術の発展。
4. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.”
彼らはまた言った、「さあ、町と塔とを建てて、その頂を天に届かせよう。そしてわれわれは名を上げて、全地のおもてに散るのを免れよう」。
- 「全地のおもてに散るのを免れよう」とあるけど、散りたくないの？ 群れをつくりたいという欲望、共同体に帰属したいという欲望か。
- 「高さ」は権力の象徴。高い建築＝権力の誇示。
- 「名を上げる」は神に対してか。神への挑戦は、滅びの予兆（死亡フラグ）だけど……。
5. And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built.
時に主は下って、人の子たちの建てる町と塔とを見て、
6. And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.
言われた、「民は一つで、みな同じ言葉である。彼らはすでにこの事をしはじめた。彼らがしようとする事は、もはや何事もとどめ得ないであろう。
- one people：ひとつの民族
- nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them
「彼らがしようとすることは何も、彼らにとっては不可能ではないだろう」
＝彼らの為そうとすることは何物にも止められない。
7. Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another's speech.”
さあ、われわれは下って行って、そこで彼らの言葉を乱し、互に言葉が通じないようにしよう」。
- 「うめよ、ふやせよ、地にみちよ」の「地にみちよ」に反して一ヵ所に集まる人々に対して、神は地に満ちるよう促す方策を施しに行く。
8. So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city.
こうして主が彼らをそこから全地のおもてに散らされたので、彼らは町を建てるのをやめた。
9. Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth. And from there the Lord dispersed them over the face of all the earth.
これによってその町の名はバベルと呼ばれた。主がそこで全地の言葉を乱されたからである。主はそこから彼らを全地のおもてに散らされた。

「バベル（בָּבֶ֔ל；bā-ḇel）」は「乱された」を表すヘブライ語（בָּלַ֥ל；bā-lal）に音が似ている。 - これにより様々な言語があるね、というお話になっているのだと思う。
- このバベルの塔の寓話は、後世の様々な物語や評論で様々な象徴に用いられるのを多く見たことがあるから概要は知っていたけれど、こんなに短いんだ……。9節で終わりなんだ……。
10. These are the generations of Shem. When Shem was 100 years old, he fathered Arpachshad two years after the flood.
セムの系図は次のとおりである。セムは百歳になって洪水の二年の後にアルパクサデを生んだ。
11. And Shem lived after he fathered Arpachshad 500 years and had other sons and daughters.
セムはアルパクサデを生んで後、五百年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。
- セムはノアの長子。
- 10節から25節まで、「誰誰が何歳になって誰誰を生んだ。その後何年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。」という形式が繰り返される。
12. When Arpachshad had lived 35 years, he fathered Shelah.
アルパクサデは三十五歳になってシラを生んだ。
13. And Arpachshad lived after he fathered Shelah 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
アルパクサデはシラを生んで後、四百三年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。
14. When Shelah had lived 30 years, he fathered Eber.
シラは三十歳になってエベルを生んだ。
15. And Shelah lived after he fathered Eber 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
シラはエベルを生んで後、四百三年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。
16. When Eber had lived 34 years, he fathered Peleg.
エベルは三十四歳になってペレグを生んだ。
17. And Eber lived after he fathered Peleg 430 years and had other sons and daughters.
エベルはペレグを生んで後、四百三十年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。
18. When Peleg had lived 30 years, he fathered Reu.
ペレグは三十歳になってリウを生んだ。
19. And Peleg lived after he fathered Reu 209 years and had other sons and daughters.
ペレグはリウを生んで後、二百九年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。
20. When Reu had lived 32 years, he fathered Serug.
リウは三十二歳になってセルグを生んだ。
21. And Reu lived after he fathered Serug 207 years and had other sons and daughters.
リウはセルグを生んで後、二百七年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。
22. When Serug had lived 30 years, he fathered Nahor.
セルグは三十歳になってナホルを生んだ。
23. And Serug lived after he fathered Nahor 200 years and had other sons and daughters.
セルグはナホルを生んで後、二百年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。
24. When Nahor had lived 29 years, he fathered Terah.
ナホルは二十九歳になってテラを生んだ。
25. And Nahor lived after he fathered Terah 119 years and had other sons and daughters.
ナホルはテラを生んで後、百十九年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。
26. When Terah had lived 70 years, he fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
テラは七十歳になってアブラム、ナホルおよびハランを生んだ。
- アブラムが重要人物である事だけ知っている。
- まとめると「(ノア→)セム→アルパクサデ→シラ→エベル→ペレグ→リウ→セルグ→ナホル→テラ→アブラム」ということになる。アブラムはセムの9世代後（ノアの10世代後）の人間である。
27. Now these are the generations of Terah. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran fathered Lot.
テラの系図は次のとおりである。テラはアブラム、ナホルおよびハランを生み、ハランはロトを生んだ。
28. Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his kindred, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
ハランは父テラにさきだって、その生れた地、カルデヤのウルで死んだ。
- in the presence of his father：彼の父の目の前で（＝彼の父に先立って）
- kindred：親類
- 「ウル(Ur)」は古代メソポタミア南部の都市「ウル(Ur)」のことだろう。
29. And Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and Iscah.
アブラムとナホルは妻をめとった。アブラムの妻の名はサライといい、ナホルの妻の名はミルカといってハランの娘である。ハランはミルカの父、またイスカの父である。
30. Now Sarai was barren; she had no child.
サライはうまずめで、子がなかった。
- うまずめ（生まず女，不生女，石女）。barren：不毛の，子を産まない。
関係ないけど、「うまずめ」の漢字表記として「石女」があるが、石は非生物・非生命の象徴として扱われることが多い。日本神話でも非生命（永遠）の象徴として石長比売（イワナガヒメ）が登場する。人間の目につく自然物のうち、植物・動物は生命であり、それ以外となると砂・石・岩あたりになるであろうから、「石は非生命の典型」のようなイメージがつくのだろう。
31. Terah took Abram his son and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife, and they went forth together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go into the land of Canaan, but when they came to Haran, they settled there.
テラはその子アブラムと、ハランの子である孫ロトと、子アブラムの妻である嫁サライとを連れて、カナンの地へ行こうとカルデヤのウルを出たが、ハランに着いてそこに住んだ。
- daughter-in-law：法律上の娘。息子の妻。嫁。
32. The days of Terah were 205 years, and Terah died in Haran.
テラの年は二百五歳であった。テラはハランで死んだ。
