神が人間を滅ぼすこと決心する。ノアに箱舟を作らせる命令をくだす。

1. When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them,
人が地のおもてにふえ始めて、娘たちが彼らに生れた時、
2. the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose.
神の子たちは人の娘たちの美しいのを見て、自分の好む者を妻にめとった。
- 1節、2節で人口の増える様子を描写している。
- 人(man)と神の子(the sons of God)は恐らく同じものだろう。
3. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.”
そこで主は言われた、「わたしの霊はながく人の中にとどまらない。彼は肉にすぎないのだ。しかし、彼の年は百二十年であろう」。
- ［Bible Gateway註；My Spirit shall not abide in はMy Spirit shall not contend withとも］
魂はひとところに留まれないため、世代交代が必要となる、という話。
abide in X：Xに留まる - 「彼」は人一般を指す。5章の登場人物は120歳どころではなかったが、これからはそうなる、という話か。
4. The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.
そのころ、またその後にも、地にネピリムがいた。これは神の子たちが人の娘たちのところにはいって、娘たちに産ませたものである。彼らは昔の勇士であり、有名な人々であった。
- ［Bible Gateway註：Nephilimはgiantsとも］
ネピリムは「天から落ちてきた者」の意であるらしい（ネフィリム - Wikipedia）。寿命が120歳という短さになってからのヒト個体のことか。 - 「人の娘たちのところに入る(come in to the daughters of man)」って何？ フランス語では「混ざり合う」のような意味の表現が使われている。「家庭に入る」「寝床に入る」のような意味か。
5. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
主は人の悪が地にはびこり、すべてその心に思いはかることが、いつも悪い事ばかりであるのを見られた。
- ここでいう「人の悪」とは、復讐に満ちた人の世を背景としている。年代的には第4章のレメクあたり。第5章で文明の発展を描写しつつ、その裏では第4章で示唆されるような殺害（＝存在の否定）がやまなかったのである。
- 英訳でintention of the thoughts of his heartとなっているものは和訳では「心に思いはかること」と訳されている。
6. And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.
主は地の上に人を造ったのを悔いて、心を痛め、
- 神って悔いるんだ……結構人格神っぽいな……。悪を生み出す存在を生み出したことに対する後悔。旧約聖書の神はまだ人格神寄り、ということかな。
- ここは第8章の伏線（？）になっている。
7. So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.”
「わたしが創造した人を地のおもてからぬぐい去ろう。人も獣も、這うものも、空の鳥までも。わたしは、これらを造ったことを悔いる」と言われた。
- blot out：抹消する。blotは名詞では「染み」「汚点」の意。
- 「這うもの」はフランス語ではinsecte（昆虫，虫けら）と訳されている。なぜ……。
8. But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
しかし、ノアは主の前に恵みを得た。
- in the eyes of the Lord：「神の目」のうちに。
9. These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.
ノアの系図は次のとおりである。ノアはその時代の人々の中で正しく、かつ全き人であった。ノアは神とともに歩んだ。
- generationは「生み出された物」の意。フランス語ではhistoireと訳されている。新共同訳でも「物語」と訳されてる。ヘブライ語ではborn of Noahに相当する表現であるようで、英訳は直訳気味、他は意訳的である。
- blameless：欠点のない。「全き」と訳されている。
ちなみにblameという語は、後期ラテン語 blasphemein に由来するが、これは新約聖書に用いられたギリシャ語 blasphemein からの借用である（『英語語源辞典』）。blasphemein は「悪口を言う」を意味するが、由来を同じくする英単語 blaspheme は「(～に対して)不敬の言葉を吐く」、即ち神への冒涜の意味を持つ。blame と blaspheme は二重語(doublet)である。
要するに、blameless という英訳はとても良い気がする。
10. And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
ノアはセム、ハム、ヤペテの三人の子を生んだ。
- 第5章の復習。
11. Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the earth was filled with violence.
時に世は神の前に乱れて、暴虐が地に満ちた。
- 「乱れて」は新共同訳では「堕落して」。
- in God's sight：「神の視界」の中で。8節でも「神の目の前」と言っていた理、「神が見る」という概念が多用されている。これは第1章からしてそうである。
12. And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.
神が地を見られると、それは乱れていた。すべての人が地の上でその道を乱したからである。
- way「道」とは神が設定した道である。人は神の期待を裏切った。
13. And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
そこで神はノアに言われた、「わたしは、すべての人を絶やそうと決心した。彼らは地を暴虐で満たしたから、わたしは彼らを地とともに滅ぼそう。
- ［Bible Gateway註：Hebrew The end of all flesh has come before me］
I have determined to make an end of all fleshはヘブライ語ではThe end of all flesh has come before me「私の前に全ての肉の終わりが到来する」に相当する表現になっている。 - この和訳だと修飾の仕方が良くないと思う。
I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them.
「わたしは全ての肉の終わりを齎すと決意した。というのも、彼らを通じて地は暴虐に溢れているからである」
14. Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch.
あなたは、いとすぎの木で箱舟を造り、箱舟の中にへやを設け、アスファルトでそのうちそとを塗りなさい。
- ［Bible Gateway註：An unknown kind of tree; transliterated from Hebrew］
gopher wood：ゴフェルの木。種類不明の木で、ヘブライ語からの翻字。ここにしか出てこないらしい。英訳では「イトスギ(cypress)」とされることが多いらしい。 - ark：箱舟。『出エジプト記』にもこの単語は登場するが、そこでは箱舟ではなく十戒を納めた「契約の箱(the Ark of the Covenant)」のことである。
- うちそと(内外)：内と外。
- pitch：①ピッチ 《原油・石油タール・木タールなどを蒸留した後に残る黒色のかす；防水や道路の舗装に用いる》②松やに，樹脂。
「アスファルト」と訳されている。新共同訳では「タール」。
15. This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark 300 cubits, its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits.
その造り方は次のとおりである。すなわち箱舟の長さは三百キュビト、幅は五十キュビト、高さは三十キュビトとし、

１キュビトは18インチあるいは45センチである。英語でキュビトと訳されているのは、ヘブライ語では「アマー(אַמָּ֖ה；am-māh)」である。フランス語訳では「クデ(coudée)」で、約50センチ。
16. Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above, and set the door of the ark in its side. Make it with lower, second, and third decks.
箱舟に屋根を造り、上へ一キュビトにそれを仕上げ、また箱舟の戸口をその横に設けて、一階と二階と三階のある箱舟を造りなさい。
- ［Bible Gateway註：roofはskylightとも］skylight：天窓
- なぜ３階立て？ 第6章で清い動物、清くない動物という区分が登場するが、「人間（ノアとその親族）」「清い動物」「清くない動物」という階層区分か。
17. For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die.
わたしは地の上に洪水を送って、命の息のある肉なるものを、みな天の下から滅ぼし去る。地にあるものは、みな死に絶えるであろう。
- 「命の息のある肉なるもの(flesh in which is the breath of life)」という表現、良い。あくまで肉塊が神の息吹を享受して動いているのだという感じがして好き。
18. But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you.
ただし、わたしはあなたと契約を結ぼう。あなたは子らと、妻と、子らの妻たちと共に箱舟にはいりなさい。
- covenant：契約，盟約。
- なぜノアの家族だけなのかというと、ノアを信用しているのは家族だけであったからだ、という読み方もあるようだ。「洪水が来るぞー」と言っても信じてもらえなかった、というようなオオカミ少年的な。
19. And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female.
またすべての生き物、すべての肉なるものの中から、それぞれ二つずつを箱舟に入れて、あなたと共にその命を保たせなさい。それらは雄と雌とでなければならない。
- 人間を滅ぼすためだけにこんなに大掛かりに、しかも動物まで巻き込んでやる必要があるのか。神なら人間だけ選んで消し飛ばすことくらいできそうだけど（偏見）。
- 呪われた地上全体を洗い流す必要があるのかもしれない。
- 人間の悪によって人間でないものがとばっちりを食う、という構図？
- 動物は人間の所有物であり、人間と一緒くたにされているから、人間と道連れになったか。
20. Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground, according to its kind, two of every sort shall come in to you to keep them alive.
すなわち、鳥はその種類にしたがい獣はその種類にしたがい、また地のすべての這うものも、その種類にしたがって、それぞれ二つずつ、あなたのところに入れて、命を保たせなさい。
21. Also take with you every sort of food that is eaten, and store it up. It shall serve as food for you and for them.”
また、すべての食物となるものをとって、あなたのところにたくわえ、あなたとこれらのものとの食物としなさい」。
- serve as X：Xとして役立つ
serveの派生語には、server，servant（召使い），service（奉仕）などがある。
「奴隷」を意味するラテン語 servus に由来する。
22. Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.
ノアはすべて神の命じられたようにした。
- commandが４文型（SVOO）で用いられている。
