1. And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
神はノアとその子らとを祝福して彼らに言われた、「生めよ、ふえよ、地に満ちよ。
2. The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered.
地のすべての獣、空のすべての鳥、地に這うすべてのもの、海のすべての魚は恐れおののいて、あなたがたの支配に服し、
- 英訳では「The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon X」となっている。直訳では「あなたの恐れがXのうえにある」となる。「あなたの恐れ」とは文脈的に「あなたに由来する(他を恐れさせる)恐怖」という意味。
- ２文目は英訳で「あなたの手の内に動物たちは解放される」となっている。
deliver は liberty（自由）と同語源。解放なのか支配なのか。解放とは別の支配への移動であるとも言える。
3. Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything.
すべて生きて動くものはあなたがたの食物となるであろう。さきに青草をあなたがたに与えたように、わたしはこれらのものを皆あなたがたに与える。
- 神が人に青草を与えたのは第3章。呪いの場面だけど……、「それのように（ごとく）」でいいのか。
4. But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.
しかし肉を、その命である血のままで、食べてはならない。
- 血抜きをして食べないといけない。血は命の象徴。血とともに身体に取り入れることは他の命を取り入れることである。
5. And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man.
あなたがたの命の血を流すものには、わたしは必ず報復するであろう。いかなる獣にも報復する。兄弟である人にも、わたしは人の命のために、報復するであろう。
- lifeblood：生き血
英語に「生き血」に相当する言葉あるんだ。 - reckoning：清算，計算
「報復」と訳されている。報復とは貸し借りの計算(logos)である。同害刑法。
6. “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.
人の血を流すものは、人に血を流される、神が自分のかたちに人を造られたゆえに。
- 人間は神の似姿であり、神の前では人間は等しくなければならない。ゆえに人は誰かを傷つけたら、同じように傷つけられなければならない（同害刑法の義務性）。
また、人間は神の性質や能力を幾分か持っている（計算能力がある）ゆえに、人が誰かを傷つけたら同じように傷つけられる、という事象が人間間で可能となる（同害刑法の可能性）。
7. And you, be fruitful and multiply, increase greatly on the earth and multiply in it.”
あなたがたは、生めよ、ふえよ、地に群がり、地の上にふえよ」。
- 「生めよ、ふえよ、地にみちよ」の言葉で始まり、その言葉で終わる。対称性。
8. Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him,
神はノアおよび共にいる子らに言われた、
9. “Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you,
「わたしはあなたがた及びあなたがたの後の子孫と契約を立てる。
10. and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark; it is for every beast of the earth.
またあなたがたと共にいるすべての生き物、あなたがたと共にいる鳥、家畜、地のすべての獣、すなわち、すべて箱舟から出たものは、地のすべての獣にいたるまで、わたしはそれと契約を立てよう。
11. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
わたしがあなたがたと立てるこの契約により、すべて肉なる者は、もはや洪水によって滅ぼされることはなく、また地を滅ぼす洪水は、再び起らないであろう」。

12. And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations:
さらに神は言われた、「これはわたしと、あなたがた及びあなたがたと共にいるすべての生き物との間に代々かぎりなく、わたしが立てる契約のしるしである。
13. I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
すなわち、わたしは雲の中に、にじを置く。これがわたしと地との間の契約のしるしとなる。
- bow：弓形のもの（虹）
- 神は「大洪水を起こさないという契約のしるし」を「雲の中の虹」とした。つまり、「雨が永遠には続かないこと」の象徴として、雨が上がった後に虹が現れるようにした。
14. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds,
わたしが雲を地の上に起すとき、にじは雲の中に現れる。
15. I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.
こうして、わたしは、わたしとあなたがた、及びすべて肉なるあらゆる生き物との間に立てた契約を思いおこすゆえ、水はふたたび、すべて肉なる者を滅ぼす洪水とはならない。
16. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”
にじが雲の中に現れるとき、わたしはこれを見て、神が地上にあるすべて肉なるあらゆる生き物との間に立てた永遠の契約を思いおこすであろう」。
17. God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
そして神はノアに言われた、「これがわたしと地にあるすべて肉なるものとの間に、わたしが立てた契約のしるしである」。
- 何回言うの。内容が12節とほぼ同じに見えるけど……。歌曲でいうサビみたいなものか。やたら繰り返しが多いのは、元が口伝（音声言語）で、韻律やリズムを意識しているからかもしれない。
また、この節以前では「人とその他の動物」が区別されて書かれているが、この17節で「地にあるすべて肉なる者」と一括りにされている。動物を支配したり神の言葉を受け取れたりする点で人間は特別だが、だとしても他の動物と同じ「肉なる者」であると念押ししているようにも見える。
18. The sons of Noah who went forth from the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.)
箱舟から出たノアの子らはセム、ハム、ヤペテであった。ハムはカナンの父である。
19. These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the people of the whole earth were dispersed.
この三人はノアの子らで、全地の民は彼らから出て、広がったのである。

X populate Y：XがYに入植する，XがYに人を居住させる - こうした経緯から、今の地球の人間はすべてノアの子孫ということになる。
20. Noah began to be a man of the soil, and he planted a vineyard.
さてノアは農夫となり、ぶどう畑をつくり始めたが、

vineの部分はwineやvinegar（酢）と同語源。 - a man of the soil：農夫
「土から生まれた人」ともとれて面白い。土から生まれたのはアダムだけれど。 - 神の言葉の描写（直接話法）から一転、歴史の話になるので要約的で回想的な語りになり、語りの速度が速くなる。
21. He drank of the wine and became drunk and lay uncovered in his tent.
彼はぶどう酒を飲んで酔い、天幕の中で裸になっていた。
- いくらなんでも話が急展開すぎる。
- uncovered：覆われていない
「覆われていない」で「裸の」の意としている。
22. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brothers outside.
カナンの父ハムは父の裸を見て、外にいるふたりの兄弟に告げた。
23. Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned backward, and they did not see their father's nakedness.
セムとヤペテとは着物を取って、肩にかけ、うしろ向きに歩み寄って、父の裸をおおい、顔をそむけて父の裸を見なかった。
24. When Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his youngest son had done to him,
やがてノアは酔いがさめて、末の子が彼にした事を知ったとき、
25. he said, “Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be to his brothers.”
彼は言った、「カナンはのろわれよ。彼はしもべのしもべとなって、その兄弟たちに仕える」。
- ノアはハムじゃなくて、その息子を呪う。
- この呪いのくだりは、3章での神とアダムの構造に似ている。神＝ノア（父なる神）、エバ・アダム＝ハム（罪を犯し罰を受ける者）の構図。違うのは、罪を犯さなかった者の存在（セム、ヤペテ）。3章ではエバは蛇の誘惑に乗り、アダムはエバの誘惑に乗ってしまい、神により大地（＝生きていくための基盤）を呪われる。ここではハムは兄弟を誘惑するが、兄弟たちはその誘いに乗らず、ハムはノアにより息子（＝系譜）を呪われる。
26. He also said, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem; and let Canaan be his servant.
また言った、「セムの神、主はほむべきかな、カナンはそのしもべとなれ。
- 「セムの神」ってなに？
- the Lord be blessed、つまり「神が祝福されている」。神が人を祝福するのと同じようには人間は神を称えられないが、称えることはできる。「神を称えよ」の意だろう。
27. May God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be his servant.”
神はヤペテを大いならしめ、セムの天幕に彼を住まわせられるように。カナンはそのしもべとなれ」。
- ［Bible Gateway註：Japheth sounds like the Hebrew for enlarge］
「ヤペテ（יֶ֔פֶת；ye-p̄eṯ）」は「大きくせよ(偉大にせよ)」を表すヘブライ語（יַ֤פְתְּ；yap̄t：May enlarge）に音が似ている。 - enlarge：大きくする（ここではto make greatくらいの意味か）
- このへんは解釈が錯綜しているようで、実際意味があまり分からない。
28. After the flood Noah lived 350 years.
ノアは洪水の後、なお三百五十年生きた。
29. All the days of Noah were 950 years, and he died.
ノアの年は合わせて九百五十歳であった。そして彼は死んだ。
